The most widespread native conifer in eastern North America, Juniperus virginiana (Eastern Red Cedar) is a densely columnar to broadly pyramidal evergreen conifer forming a splendid exclamation point in the landscape.
Above ground, the tree grows 1' to 2' per year on a single trunk. It matures at about 40' to 50' tall and 8' to 20' wide, becoming rounder with age. Very old specimens are capable of growing 80' or more feet tall and 30' or more feet wide.
Eastern red-cedar is native to North America. These cold-hardy, adaptable evergreen trees serve many purposes in the landscape, especially in sites that are dry, alkaline or windy. The foliage of scale-like needles is attractive but prickly.
Cedar trees are not hard to grow and will give elegance to any space where they have room to spread. The trees start easily from seed but require a 48-hour soaking period and another month in the refrigerator, along with some potting soil in a zip lock bag.
